You may recognise Dunhill for its fancy cigarette lighters, but Mark Weston — creative director for the brand — wants to show you otherwise. The former senior vice president of menswear at Burberry gave us a taste of the brand’s future with his spring-summer 2020 collection: a myriad of contemporary pieces showcasing a collision of cultures that is — surprise! — happening in our increasingly globalised world. As models strode out from a fog of blue smoke, many of the pieces saw classic ’80s Japanese design influences from kimono-style double-breasted jackets via wrapped tailoring, to pressed and washed wool-silks along its evening wear fabrics. And in something of an unexpectedly awesome mashup (think BTS and Halsey), Weston teamed up with Tokyo-based digital artist Kenta Cobayashi to incorporate his signature smudging technique into the looks, which one could see across the printed garments and ponchos featuring glitched images of Dunhill’s Jermyn Street store and house logo. With its venture into Japanese fashion culture while also maintaining its British luxe roots, Weston is making a case towards propelling Dunhill into the fashion-future.
