Cate Blanchett at the 18th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards
Kate Beckinsale at the 18th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards
NUMBERS GAME: Mastering Fortysomething
by Kee

It was a fashion masterclass from the two Kates (or Cates) in attendance at the 18th Costume Designer Guild Awards in Beverly Hills. We don’t need to tell you that these two thespians aren’t pushing 40 – they are well on their way to the half-century mark (Kate Beckinsale turns 43 in July while Cate Blanchett turns 47 in May). And if there’s one thing that these red carpet snaps are telling us other than forties isn’t what it used to be is that ageing doesn’t make one kick the habit for picking clothes that flatter. Unlike the sharing of one’s age, taste never lies. Take hints from Beckinsale’s choice of a Hamsel floor-length gown with a lace embroidered back. The shade is a smart choice, falling into the same polished Audrey Hepburn-esque bracket that practically works for all body types and all kinds of fat days you’re feeling. Of course, it helps that Beckinsale works out religiously in-between all of those catsuit-wearing movie sequel days which means a skintight gown like this is considered roomy. Meanwhile, the standard bearer for ethereal vibes Cate Blanchett appeared to get the same wardrobe memo too, scoring high marks for her Atelier Versace couture gown, which included shots of her armpit rolls in all its glory (she’s so goddess-like even those armpit rolls make us want to flaunt ours). Her glossier LBD thanks to a sleek chainmail texture played up to the night’s theme and we can’t help but to think how she already looks Oscars-ready less than a week to the main event (she has a Best Actress nod for this year’s edition). They awarded her a prize on Tuesday evening too, although we would have given her and Beckinsale trophies just for showing up and setting an example to the industry’s costumers about dressing for real life – regardless if you’re fortysomething or not.
