You don’t need a public service announcement or a Malala Yousafzai anecdote to remind you that women… are just downright awesome. But it sure as well won’t hurt in taking out column inches at every opportunity to celebrate the fairer sex and every ball-busting move they’ve made in recent times. (Hey, who did you think orchestrated your introduction into this world?) So when Georg Jensen, the longstanding Danish label known for their stylish homeware and designer accessories, centred their latest ad run on who they rate as today’s most powerful women, it was another case of it’s about damn time. This time around, it wasn’t another homage to the rock hard body of Gigi Hadid and the overwhelming popularity of Kendall Jenner as seen with other prestigious luxury houses; Georg Jensen tapped on the backstories of five remarkable women whose names probably only vaguely ring a bell. They are Danish director Susanne Bier (Oscar winner for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2011); Norwegian boxer Cecilia Brækhus (first woman in the world to hold the WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO titles simultaneously); Australian standup comic Sarah Kendall (who literally stood up for herself against a heckler threatening sexual violence); Iranian motocross rider Behnaz Shafiei (athlete fighting against gender and cultural stereotypes); and Dominique Crenn (the World’s Best Female Chef of 2016). These women are as real as they come; each one triumphant in their respective male-dominated industry and live to tell the tale of how they make beating the odds look like a warm-up exercise. The campaign, entitled You Can Never Be Too Much You, champions every women’s right to be “strong, demanding, strong, provocative, loud and ambitious.” Because if these women have taught us anything, it’s that achieving greatness starts from mustering the courage to be different.
