There’s always that one article that goes, “in an unexpected collab of the ages…” and we simply do not tolerate that sort of hoodwinking, bamboozling, astray-leading puffery. But now that we’ve made that has truly come as a genuine surprise that French luxury fashion house Givenchy has teamed up with Japanese sneaker manufacturer Onitsuka Tiger for a limited edition sneaker collaboration that may end up tipping some serious fashion scales. And, like we said, we’re not saying this without reason: this is the first time Givenchy has partnered with an outside sneaker manufacturer on such a global scale; likewise, Onitsuka Tiger has never before collaborated with a luxury fashion house. So it was a shock to the system when Givenchy dropped the sneaker at this week’s Pitti Uomo fashion week in Florence, debuting the co-branded “Mexico 66 GDX” on the grand stage. Featuring the Mexico 66 silhouette - a favourite of creative director Claire Waight Keller - and two variations including an all-white version spotlighting the brand’s signature tiger-stripe lines and a black version in Givenchy’s trademark red and white details, it’s a surefire way to bring Onitsuka back into the forefront of sneakerheads’ fashion consciousness. Along with leather uppers handcrafted in Japan by Onitsuka, it’s a comfort-focused sneaker that will keep your feet cool and breathable in some soon-to-be tropical humidity. Plus, the collab couldn’t have come at a better time: the label - one of the oldest shoe manufacturers in Japan - is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, and come 2020 will be an official sponsor of Tokyo Olympics for its rising comeback. The limited numbered sneaker debuts June 13.
