The secret’s out: Your next It bag looks just like this. From the creative mind of Clare Waight Keller comes a seriously stylish handbag under the Givenchy name. Introducing the Mystic, a top-handle handbag for top-level women.

If you have been following the career and creative timeline of British designer Clare Waight Keller, you will know that hype and logos were never her calling card. Until today, the lead creative for Givenchy is still reminded of those iconic bags – namely Faye and Drew – that she created for her previous employer. They were iconic for simple reasons but as any so-called expert designer will tell you: simple is hard to do and even harder to protect from being copied. Those aforementioned bags toyed with shapes that were classy and playful as well as outfitted with hardware that one might only spot from indie jewellers. Most importantly, there was real soul and afterthought in the designs that stood out from the pack of leather carriers that were just trying to make a quick buck. Now that Keller just crossed her sophomore year at Givenchy – she is the first female artistic director for the fashion house – the same loyalists who followed from her Chloé days have seen her stock rise tenfold, from designing Meghan Markle’s haute couture wedding gown to being crowned British Fashion Designer of the Year in 2018 to being included in this year’s honour roll by Time Magazine as one of the most influential people in the world. With this added level of attention, Keller has gone about her work with poise, knuckling down to lay the groundwork for the house and deliver her first bag design just over a year ago. It was named the GV3 and played with hardware via a functional short metal chain as well as the house’s double-G logo clasp as the main star. It was clear what Keller wanted to do: build a framework of bags that today’s independent women will proudly carry from day to night. Yes, it may be a staple but a strong one at that with little twists in extra compartments and hardware that only Keller will insist upon. Fast forward to present day and Keller’s next big handbag launch comes in the form of pre-fall 2019’s Mystic. This top-handle carrier is Givenchy’s ode to the big bag. Launched simultaneously with its couture collection, it is inspired by “power and restraint.” This is the kind of power-stating carrier that today’s women with the corner office carry. Structured, soft yet solid, and with a firm grip required. That said, a feature on the bag also showcases its vulnerable side. The gold metal hardware denoted by the signature double-G clasp on the front is partially hidden from view by the calfskin leather flap. Even if the flap is accidentally left open, the bag’s contents are cleverly hidden from view. It is this form of discretion that Keller’s known for, having built her greatest hits based on those design ideals. Never one to flock to using logos as a selling point, the embossed Givenchy name on the bag is just as discreet (try to spot it from the photos here). And it’s worth repeating that as simple as it looks, plenty of handiwork goes into the making of a Mystic: handmade topstitching, hand-painted edging, and hand-applied cushions, just to name a few. There are also eight colours to choose from with the option of bag charms such as a gold-finished dice, whistle or a medal. And if you ever need a humble brag about this bag, just let others know this was designed by one of the most influential people in the world.
