By now, you probably know American football quarterback Colin Kaepernick as the most popular athlete in the world who hasn’t actively kicked a ball or made a pass for a team since his departure from San Francisco 49ers in 2016. For the severely uninitiated, the 32-year-old free agent is most well-known for standing and kneeling during the national anthem as a silent protest against racial injustice and police brutality in the country. The reaction he drew was polarising which became a nationwide debate when U.S. President Donald Trump chimed in that players who disrespect the anthem should be fired from the league. Fast forward to 2020 and Kaepernick is still without a team but he has since scored global support for his beliefs, including being the face of Nike’s social justice campaign. Though signed with Nike, Kaepernick’s role hasn’t been one used to hawk merch for the sporting goods giant. In the last couple of years, only a few co-branded items have been launched such an all-black jersey and tee that sold out within hours which is testament of his pull. Now, Nike’s cashing in. It is doing the same with a Kaepernick sneaker based on its Air Force 1 silhouette to be released on December 23. Fans of Kaepernick’s activism will love the details on this black-and-white sneaker such as the American footballer’s avatar embroidered on the heel tab, his personal initial logo on the tongue, and a patterned sock liner. Don’t expect this to be the last version considering Kaepernick’s playing days aren’t numbered yet. The sneaker retails for US$110.
