Not more than half a day has elapsed since Louis Vuitton wrapped up the fashion week season that iconic couturier Jean Paul Gaultier dropped some bombshell news in similar fashion as Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons did during the end of Milan Fashion Week. The 67-year-old designer, who announced his retirement from couture in January before delivering one epic send-off of a runway show, has handed the creative reins of his next fashion collection to Chitose Abe of Sacai. But not permanently, though. Gaultier is adopting a similar guest designer concept that a few fashion houses have roadtested in previous years (Diesel’s Red Tag Project, Moncler’s Genius) though this is still a rare and bold move in haute couture. But if anyone appreciates the thinking of fashion's l'enfant terrible, they will agree that this is just Gaultier being Gaultier. Abe, whose label just celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, is on a hot streak as of late having delivered some of the most major footwear releases with Nike in 2019. Abe will return to familiar fashion disciplines again having honed her skills as a pattern cutter at Comme des Garçons and then at Junya Watanabe before branching out on her own. Mark down the month of July as her debut for the house that popularised the Breton stripes will be the hottest ticket in town.

Update: Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Chitose Abe and Jean Paul Gaultier have decide to postpone the show to January 2021. Watch this space.
