There will come a time in your life when the scented candles in your living space just don’t cut it anymore. The everyday vanilla, lavender and sandalwood varieties you light up start to smell like normalcy which may or may not be the vibe you’re going for in 2020. Good news if you’re in the latter category as Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe has launched scented candles that aren’t your typical olfactory choices carried by your local dealer. Anderson unveiled that they are inspired by the “meticulous recordings of plant life by artists working during the Age of Discovery: the cyanotypes of algae by the British artist Anna Atkins, the illustrations of exotic South American flora by the Spanish explorer Mutis, and the work of Kazuma Ogawa, who pioneered photomechanical printing as a means to document the flowers of Japan.” Anderson’s 11 finalised scents – available as candles, wax candle holders, fragrances, rattan diffusers, and soap – are just as mysterious to the senses if they were sorbet flavours. But he explains that they are also based on his memories of the vegetable garden. The choices are: honeysuckle, beetroot, juniper berry, tomato leaves, coriander, liquorice, scent of marijuana, luscious pea, oregano, cypress balls, and ivy. And we know what you’re thinking about that marijuana option; when your room smells a little suspect you can now blame it on the candle.
