You know what they say about living your best life, hitting the reset button, and doing things differently in the New Year? Well, in the case of Louis Vuitton, it’s heeding all those advice on the first day of 2021 by offering the fashion set a new take on the iconic monogram thanks to Swiss contemporary artist Urs Fischer. (And mind you, very few in the history of the house have been given the blessing to remix those world famous luxury logos.) As for how Fischer was given an honour that’s even rarer than a knighthood? In 2019, he worked with Louis Vuitton on an Artycapucines BB bag that instantly became a much-talked about hit as the carrier was paired with hyper-realistic fruit sculptures that one could choose to accessorise with the blank canvas-like white bag (no, he wasn’t responsible for that duct-taped banana movement). This cheeky and somewhat defiant look at luxury helped the 47-year-old get a direct line to the top brasses. That said, even some of his famous lifelike waxed sculptures bear some similarities with Louis Vuitton’s eye-catching window displays in previous seasons which only goes to show the chemistry in their creativity. Fischer’s rework on the monogram taps on the premise of his life-long work which is the exploration of transformation and decay. Take those wax sculptures of humans, for instance, which he often lights up and leaves them to melt. He has looked at the monogram with a similar viewpoint, keeping the logo recognisable but capturing it in the middle of its transformation. This somewhat distorted and abstract result was not a work of Photoshop magic. Fischer hand drew the monogram using a spontaneous technique he terms as memory sketches which is perhaps as straight forward of an explanation about his process. There’s even a pop art element to the result that one can relate to that iconic Louis Vuitton collab with Stephen Sprouse. This motif however doesn’t share the neon colour codes of the former; it has been proposed in two main colourways: black and red as well as black and white. Expect to find this monogram on a series of sportier ready-to-wear, low- and high-top sneakers, and up to seven of the fashion house’s most popular bags such as a the Keepall, Cabas, Speedy, and Neverfull. Rather than just a simple print onto leather, Fischer’s version of bags have been given a tuffetage treatment to create a three-dimensional texture of the monogram made out of a velvet-like material that one would enjoying running one’s finger over. We're expecting more colours to come in the near future. Keep your fingers crossed and your eyes peeled. The Louis Vuitton x Urs Fischer collab retails in stores and online on January 1.
