To state that Fawaz Gruosi’s life is anything but boring is perhaps a big understatement. The acclaimed jewellery designer who placed black diamonds on the map is tapping on his nine lives to stage one last comeback that not even insiders would have predicted he would dare make. After all, he left De Grisogono – the Geneva-based label he founded in 1993 – under acrimonious circumstances in 2019, leaving behind a world of glamorous Cannes parties and beautiful people. But just a year later, De Grisogono filed for bankruptcy and was entangled in a criminal investigation involving money laundering and corruption by the daughter of Angola’s former president and her husband who set up a Malta-based firm to buy a majority stake in the jewellery brand. While all of this sounds like a plot of a Hollywood movie – and it deserves a good script down the line – Gruosi’s early departure helped him steer clear from at least some of the drama. Now, the 68-year-old is turning the bold jewellery he designed for De Grisogono under a new label that bears his own name and he is serious in proving his previous success wasn’t a fluke. Gruosi’s banking on those same risk-tasking creations that are far from conventional ideals as he combines volumes, textures, curves, and movement in every piece. For the uninitiated, his jewellery pieces naturally seek the spotlight and are for women who know they can charm a stadium full of people if she has to.
