In a bid to make us guilt-trip about our current choices of footwear – unless you’re just into that lifestyle of wearing socks and nothing else – Adidas and Allbirds have finally unveiled their feel-good collab that shows even potential rivals can break bread and split profits. Called Futurecraft.Footprint, these running shoes claim to be the lowest carbon footprint footwear ever at 2.94kg CO2e per pair, which is nearly five times less than the usual carbon dioxide emissions to create a standard pair of footwear. Allbirds, which is already lauded by many for its innovations in the sustainability department (it is known for using ethically sourced wool, tree fibres and sugarcane in its wares), has shared knowledge with Adidas to quicken the process in getting more earth-friendly footwear to the masses. For example, Futurecraft.Footprint features Adidas’ Lightstrike lightweight construction fused with Allbirds’ sugarcane-based SweetFoam. Every part of Futurecraft.Footprint has been dissected and rebuilt by both brands with the hopes to cut carbon emissions without compromising on performance. Even a new rubber compound – which is part of the outsole construction – has been developed to help lessen any wastage, which can be seen in the new thread patterns on the sole. That said, getting your hands on a pair might prove more difficult than even a Yeezy. Adidas will only produce 100 pairs for a May launch with lucky buyers chosen via a raffle draw. They will be launching another 10,000 pairs later in 2021 although nothing is set in stone. Expect a wider release in the summer of 2022 (if we manage to get there).
