We’ll be the first to admit that looking at kids breezing past us in those shoes with wheels (Heelys, they call them) has us wondering what we’ve been missing out on. (Okay, there’s also that wee bit of irritation but mostly because we’re not involved in the fun.) Back in the pre-millennial days, roller skates were a big deal. How big of a deal? Ask anyone in that age bracket about a contact sport called roller derby and you’d get the drift. While shoes with wheels hasn’t gotten traction with today’s adult population, a eureka moment happened on social media when customisers started to offer popular kicks with the option of attaching removable wheels to the rubber soles. Fashion houses have sniffed out an opportunity in this segment in its bid to shore up fun-ness in their launches. One such example of this designer crossover is a cobalt blue pair fashioned by Bottega Veneta that has quietly sneaked into its Wardrobe 02 collection, its renamed pre-fall 2021 capsule. Made of lambskin, this Quilt sneaker-roller skate hybrid perhaps the snazziest pair you can court in the open market (and in a colourway to match with your potential Yeezy Gap buys). Don’t think these are just restricted to outdoor wear only; master it and you just might find it useful zipping around the office or at home. It is priced at just over US$2,200 and is available for pre-order now.
