Phoebe Philo

The rumours have been swirling for years. Perhaps Philophiles have been manifesting this moment since the day she called time on her decade-long stay at Céline. Although she was out of the game far shorter than the late Alber Elbaz, the fashion community has been waiting for this comeback like the emergence of a fashion vaccine. The 48-year-old British designer has been biding her time, watching Hedi Slimane wipe the slate clean at the fashion house she helped build as well as witnessing protégés like Daniel Lee and Yuni Ahn be the second best thing for those missing the Philo aesthetic. But lo and behold, Philo is back and this time around she is putting her name front, right and centre of the clothing and accessories that have had a life of its own amongst collectors. With the backing of LVMH – the company is said to have taken a minority stake in her brand – there’s little to suggest that this is any riskier of a gamble than a Rihanna-fronted high fashion line. Are we ready for this moment? Philophiles will tell you they have been ready since 2017.
