It was in 1998 that the late great Lee McQueen introduced the wonders of robotics at his spring-summer 1999 runway show, his 13th effort for his namesake label. What might seem normal by today’s standards, it had a runway model on a rotating floorboard being sensually hosed down by an ink-squirting clique of robotic arms. Whatever you might feel about a moment that could have been a teaser about an AI takeover, it will go on to be remembered as uber creative and courageous as well. While this black ink shower might not be on Sarah Burton’s agenda for her Alexander McQueen chapter, there’s now a new collection that perhaps hints at those days some 23 years later. Called McQueen Graffiti, the collection features the McQueen brand name brush stroked and flashed on staples like tees, trenches, down jackets, handbags, and even eyewear. Neatly, this time around.
