We’re not going to lie: It’s so crazy enough of an idea that you might not have imagined a storied watchmaker like IWC Schaffhausen putting it in motion. But if there’s a part of you that gives a shit about the world we live in, then this ought to matter. IWC’s introduction of a new strap made out of a low-impact paper-based material called TimberTex hopes to move the sustainable convo forward in watchmaking. TimberTex is “80% composed of natural plant fibres, 100% coloured with natural dyes and 100% handmade in Italy.” The journey to discover a leather alternative started in 2018 and it didn’t want to just create a faux leather variant but one that makes use of new or recycled paper right down to the lining and stitching. This led IWC to discover tree farms in Scandinavia and Austria that fulfilled its stringent conditions. What has perhaps kept the high-end market from adopting natural-based straps in the first place could be the way it feels as well as its durability. With TimberTex, IWC hopes to put those concerns to bed as it has carried out thorough research to ensure that the paper-based straps are breathable on flesh, resilient, and be able to withstand humidity. Such is IWC’s confidence of the advanced material that it even claims that it can be worn in water or during sports. The straps come in the standard IWC colours too such as blue, brown, and black and are currently available on two Portugieser and Portofino models.
