While Tonga’s flagbearer has continued to prove that baby oil is all the clothing you need when attending an occasion as grand as an Olympic Games opening ceremony, let’s not downplay how real clothing still matters. The Olympic Games fashion circuit is still dominated by a host of big names like Emporio Armani, Ralph Lauren, and Lacoste. But it is the entry of Liberia’s surprising choice of Telfar that has perhaps raised a few eyebrows. Maker of the hardest to acquire It bags around, consider this as Telfar Clemens’ way of paying it forward, having immigrated with his family to the U.S. in the ‘90s when they fled from the Liberian Civil War. This is equally a big deal for the Liberian national team as it has been without a clothing sponsor for over two decades. Telfar was given carte blanche to design the uniform as well as performance wear and the result aligns with the flair that Telfar is known for. Items include basketball-inspired tunics and even one-shoulder running tops, a collection categorised as gender-neutral and will be made available to the public. And yes, Clemens was right up front with the flagbearer in Tokyo sporting his designs. Quite a historic homecoming indeed!
