If you’re looking at skateboarding a tad differently after it made its debut at the Olympic Games, then you’re going to want to know all about this wristwatch that’s blessed by one of those badass skateboarders putting on a show in Tokyo. Lyon-born Aurélien Giraud, who finished a respectable sixth place in the Men’s Final, worked on the Baume Skate wristwatch with Baume & Mercier before he left his homeland to make history at the games. This wristwatch itself isn’t just a lazy co-sign gig; look at the case and you might have noticed that it is made out of wood. Giraud gave Baume & Mercier his used skate decks to turn them into these wonderfully finished 42mm cases, which begs the question to the number of decks he owns. Several disc-shaped samples were removed from those donated decks, then stacked, and then treated using water-based resin to strengthen the wood. This is to provide a watertight seal for the case that is responsible for housing the self-winding movement. Now, if you peek closer, there is a textured central disc that uses actual grip tape to create playing up to the skateboarding theme. This central disc rotates at snail pace with each passing minute, displaying the hour that can be referenced by position of the cut-out window with Baume’s name. So what if he didn’t snag a medal? We bet the rest of them don’t have a mechanical wristwatch made in their honour.
