If you think Chanel only makes J12 wristwatches, with all due respect, where have you been? Its exclusive men’s line, called Monsieur, which debuted in 2016 has distilled a series of dressy mechanical marvels that will test the resolve of your bank balance and then some. Now, the Monsieur is following in the successful timeline of its older sibling J12 with the launch of a Superleggera edition after five years in the market. Superleggera, which means lightweight and is often used in the context of fast cars, heralds this wristwatch model’s sportier turn. And by sporty, we don’t mean you should be taking this onto the tennis courts or using it to time sprints on the treadmill. There’s still a dressy element to this sleek Batman-approved uniform featuring a 42mm matte black ceramic case. Peep at the dial work and Chanel has spared no expense to create an eye-catching guilloché dial as part of a layered construction. Purists, however, will tell you what tickles their fancy the most. A regulator dial with retrograde minutes and a jumping hour is a rare breed and only the most courageous watchmakers dare to try it as it essentially deconstructs the reading of time (which for most folks might take a bit of practice to get used to). This package is powered by a manual-winding movement, designed by the well-respected Romain Gauthier, and will put to rest anyone doubting the mechancial prowess of the house's wares. The watch is retailing at US$39,400.
