Let’s not kid ourselves that clocking 40 years for any fashion company these days is an easy target – it’s really not. Just ask any upcoming designer what’s next for fashion and retail in the next two to three years and they might just give you crossed fingers and a shoulder shrug at best. In the case of Emporio Armani, sharing the same age as the oldest millennial is perhaps one way in understanding why the Italian label is just as relevant in 2021. Leader of fine Italian fashion and godfather of modern tailoring Mr. Giorgio Armani is still in the driving seat all these years, overseeing the set-up that is known to be a more youthful and easy-going sibling to his original namesake label. But don’t mistake the 87-year-old’s statement on youthful fashion to be slouchy and shabby garments that are essentially just sweats and slacks layered with hype and hyperbole – they wouldn’t have made it to 40 years if that were the case. That said, action speaks louder than words and Emporio Armani’s spring-summer 2022 collection delivers another strong point-of-view on what millennials want. It hits the nail on the head to what the new gen of working professionals want today: easy-to-wear clothing with an understanding on the demands of a Sex And The City-type life. It’s the kind of swerve that the best Japanese designers have been known to do for decades: lightness, high-quality fabrication, comfort, mastering silhouettes, and utilitarianism. And we kid you not that it has kickstarted its first live show since the peak of the pandemic firing on all cylinders: Patchworked windbreakers, light denim bizwear, harness-like suspenders, breathable nylon parkas, layered basketball shorts, handwoven cropped tops, belted linen jackets, iridescent sheer trousers, off-shoulder rompers, light-catching embellished separates... just to name a few. Judging by this output that has certainly been shaped by WFH culture, Emporio Armani knows that its customer base yearns for looking fab even if the best social activities they can ask for these days are Happy Hour and group yoga. And congrats to Mr. Armani for proving once again that age is simply just a number.
