Architect Smiljan Radic’s extraordinary, and much-Instagrammed bubble, provided a mortal home to the heavenly Alexander McQueen spring-summer 2022 show. As the skies above us turned from optimistic Yves Klein blue to menacing inky tones, so did the clothes – cloud print dresses in every shade of blue, from clear and calm to dark and stormy. The subversive McQueen ying-yang – dark and light, masculine and feminine, pretty and tough – was evident throughout. Rigorous tailoring was spliced with romantic details, voluminous parachute sleeves blossoming from an otherwise masculine silhouette. Tough-girl bomber jackets became mini dresses. Even the dreamiest gowns (of which there were many) were given the London treatment with boots, biker jackets and a badass cast of brilliant women. The takeaway from Burton’s first London show in five years? Optimism. Chiffon gowns in lemon, blush and the softest lilac seemed ready to flutter into the sky, grounded only by the house's new Sprint Runner sneakers. Beaded fringing swished around the body as if blessed by a soothing breeze, while the exquisite crystal embellishments on closing looks spoke of bewitching nights ahead which are yearned for after the last 18 months. The beauty of blue skies indeed.
