You might know Tan France as the star of Queer Eye and Next In Fashion. But did you also know that the 38-year-old made such a killing from the fashion game that early on in his career that he considered himself retired before reality TV brought him back in? Well, now you know. Having started as a designer and director for fast fashion giants like Zara and Bershka, the British-born, America-based designer of Pakistani heritage is familiar with launching brands having founded and flipped a few before calling it a day. Now, a brand incubator and retail platform Thmbl has given him the opportunity to kickstart another without worrying about the business end of the deal. Enter Was Him, an outerwear-focused genderless fashion label named after his middle name Washim. France admitted that being teased in school for his middle name made him want to turn a bad memory into a good one. Was Him’s wares cover several aspects of his backstory, by blending traditional embroidery from his Pakistani background as well as strong tailoring that the English are known for. And if you notice, there is an equestrian theme in the mix too, a nod to France’s husband who is from Wyoming and was raised on a ranch. The debut collection features an array of colourblocked coats and zipped jackets with contrasting pockets. Mark your calendar for its launch in mid-November.
