If we were to tell you that Netflix and New Balance made a sneaker inspired by a satirical sci-fi flick about a comet on its way to destroy Earth (as well as school us on climate change), you’d probably think this marketing stunt was part of the comedy as well. But hey, whatever your thoughts are about climate change (and comedy about climate change), this collaboration is a serious effort. And in a bid to show that they understand sustainability too, the higher-ups only sanctioned the production of a single pair of these white 550 sneakers. Embellished by Matt Burgess of MattB Customs, these sneakers feature something special embedded on the upper which probably is the key reason why there is only one pair in circulation: 34 fragments of meteorite crystals make up the logo and side panels. Although these alien gems aren’t real-life Kryptonites that would interest Bezos or Musk, they do feature a stunning array of colours which are as mesmerising as molten lava and upmarket marble. These meteorite crystals come from the Seymchan meteorite which is similar in age – 4.5 billion years – to the comet portrayed in the film. Sotheby’s was tapped to sell the pair online which went on sale on December 17 for US$13,200. No word yet on the new owner but at least the World Wildlife Fund benefited from the proceeds.
