Lea T's groundbreaking campaign for Givenchy for fall 2010

The answer is Lea T (and possibly always). Known as the first trans model to appear in a fashion campaign when she fronted Givenchy’s fall-winter 2010 collection, the Brazilian helped to pave the way for others in an industry that can be its own harshest critic. Riccardo Tisci, who was then the Givenchy creative lead, was the one who insisted on casting her in a campaign much to the bewilderment of his peers. What followed for her were groundbreaking beauty contracts and a slew of magazine covers and catwalk ops, which also helped to normalise the notion that a transsexual should be getting similar chances and treatment as everyone else (yes, it was still a radical idea as recent as a decade ago). Today, Lea T is back again in the conversation with Tisci’s Burberry announcing a twist to its pre-collection format by naming her as the first personality it will be working with on a new collection. The Burberry chief creative officer will be working with a new partner for every one of his pre-collections for the forseeable future, titling this collborative effort as Friends and Family, which is all the clue you need in figuring out future names (Irina? Marina? Rihanna?). This isn’t Lea T’s first venture with Burberry either as she has been invited by Tisci to star in a festive campaign a couple of years ago as well as walk the spring 2021 runway show. What’s in store? All will be revealed in January.
