The 'De Beers Blue' diamond
The 'De Beers Blue' diamond

Is there a more important diamond you need to know about in 2022? Probably not. The De Beers Blue, a 15.10-carat stunner mined just last year from the famed Cullinan Mine in South Africa, has found a new owner to the tune of US$57.5 million. And the quick turnaround from rough to the auction floor hasn’t gone unnoticed either. This vivid blue diamond wasn’t a hard sell considering that this is the largest of its kind to appear in auction. Judging by the record prices fetched for fancy vivid blues, we predicted it to hit the ballpark of the 14.62-carat Oppenheimer Blue that was sold for US$57.5 million. And it did. Sotheby’s unveiled that this blue diamond was part of a bidding war between four individuals before one person outbid the others via landline. On De Beers part, it has housed this stunning rock in a special titanium crown ring design inspired by its Alchemist of Light high jewellery collection. Right now, all we can do is wait to hear about its new name.
