This is more than just another runway show in a far-flung locale. Although Chanel picked Dakar in Senegal as the next gorgeous place on this planet to unveil its Métiers d’art 2022-2023 collection – the first time any major fashion house has done so on African soil – its wider plan to engage the culture and its people has made this three-day takeover a lesson for others on what a proper cultural exchange can look like in modern times. The fashion house chose the Palais de Justice building as the show venue, a former courthouse that also hosted the Dakar Biennale earlier this year. It has made a commitment to help fund part of the restoration of the historic premises that once served as the first courthouse in Senegal. Apart from this charitable donation, Chanel will also bring La Galerie du 19M to the country next January to promote, share, and exchange know-how of the craft with locals in order to encourage more people to join the fashion industry. For now, feast your eyes on the star power that Chanel gathered in a city many have nicknamed as the Paris of Africa.
