Dior doesn’t make it a habit of naming its carriers after people. Subtlety is the name of the game at the Parisian fashion house and there have only been rare exceptions namely the Lady Dior bag after Princess Diana and the Bobby bag after Monsieur Dior’s beloved pooch. The former, however, has been a flagbearer for Dior since 1995 and has seen its fair share of designers and artists taking a crack at levelling-up on the timeless build. Being an It bag for the last 28 years is no easy feat – just ask the tens of thousands of other designs that have been binned and forgotten in the last few decades. When Maria Grazia Chiuri decided to release another remake to the classic Lady Dior via the fashion house’s fall-winter 2022 collection, she wanted a design that alludes to the past as well as the present. She landed on what has been christened as the Lady 95.22, with the numerals a nod to the birth year (1995) and the year of its current remake (2022). What has visibly changed is its boxy shape that has taken on a few new curves. (Think JLo in 1995, and JLo of today if you get our drift.) The base of the bag has widened generously which means more storage space for those who have been yearning for it in their Lady Dior. The gold-finished hardware in the handle has also been reworked, which are now unlined to expose the gorgeous metal which shimmers along with the Dior letter charms. And just to make sure that others can see from right across the room, the quilted leather flaunts a macrocannage pattern, the iconic aesthetic that mimics the look of the old canned chairs that Monsieur Dior adored. The Lady 95.22 is already getting heavy rotation from its number one ambassador in Blackpink’s Jisoo. It is no coincidence that the South Korean is toting this handbag around: she was born in the same year as the Lady Dior bag and she is also part of the biggest K-pop group in history as of 2022.
