Ha, ha, ha. Bell & Ross gets the last laugh with the launch of its new BR-01 Laughing Skull timepiece, the 5th iteration of its B&R “Skull” collection. The skull symbol, used for centuries by pirates and military, represents a conundrum of courage, fear and vulnerability as they faced impending death in the line of duty. The BR 01 Laughing Skull, equipped with in-house movement and automaton for the first time, quite ironically, pays tribute to them in lively fashion. While earlier skull watches were powered by ETA movements, Laughing Skull is equipped with an inhouse, hand-wound movement known as the BR.CAL.206, formed in the shape of skull. The mechanism then fits seamlessly onto the 46mm x 46mm square case, with the minute track engraved around the skull-shaped dial. In the extension of the 4 bones, the 4 bridges secure the main plate to the case to form a single assembly floating in the center of the watch. The base plate of the movement is shaped like the face of a skull, an appliqué which has been stamped to render it in relief. The dagger and sword-shaped hands have been skeletonised and filled with black Super-Luminova, ensuring that it illuminates even in the darkest of places. The BR-01 case, composed of micro-blasted steel, gives the watch a matte finishing, and adorned on the case is a deeply engraved “Clous de paris” guilloche pattern, offering a pleasing contrast to the skull rendered in relief. Besides its lively appearance though, the watch itself is just as incredibly animated as a result of its automaton. As the watch is wound, the mandible allows the jaws of the skull to open and close as if laughing. Like it or not, these watches make a bold impression.
